When you get out of bed in the morning and move into the living room, your bedroom and living room lights automatically turn on gently to start your day smoothly.
This automation ensures a comfortable and convenient start to your day. I use blackout curtains, so it's dark when I wake up in the morning. To resolve this, I attached a SmartThings Motion Sensor, which has a built-in magnet, to the pole of a table lamp located at the boundary between my bedroom area and the living room. When I leave my bed and move into the living room area, the motion sensor detects my movement, automatically turning on all lights in the bedroom and living room at 50% brightness. I grouped the smart lights within the app for easier control, but individual lighting devices can also be selected separately. Additionally, I set a precondition to ensure that the automation only operates between 6:00 AM and midnight, excluding my usual sleeping hours. This prevents lights from activating unnecessarily during brief awakenings, such as visiting the bathroom or getting water during the night, as even 50% brightness can feel too bright at those times. Additionally, the automation changes your home’s location mode from "Night" to "Home," seamlessly transitioning your smart home environment from sleep mode to daytime mode. As with most motion sensors, the SmartThings Motion Sensor has a fan-shaped detection area. Therefore, it’s essential to understand the sensor’s detection range and carefully adjust the installation angle according to your home layout. Doing so ensures that the sensor accurately triggers only from movements within your desired area.
