When the bathroom is no longer occupied, the shower stall and vanity lights automatically turn off.
This automation automatically turns off the shower booth and vanity lights once everyone has exited the bathroom. It utilizes the SiHAS People Counter sensor installed on the bathroom door frame (correctly aligned according to entry direction, referencing the + and - marks) to precisely determine occupancy. When the sensor count returns to zero, indicating that no one is present, the automation turns off the bathroom lights, preventing unnecessary energy use.
To enable SmartThings to control these bathroom lights reliably, I previously replaced the original 4-gang wall switch with a SiHAS Zigbee Switch (remember to turn off the circuit breaker before installation for safety). With this switch, SmartThings manages the shower booth light, vanity light, exhaust fan, and hallway light outside the bathroom seamlessly.
The SiHAS People Counter Sensor uses PIR and ToF technology to accurately track and remember the number of people entering and leaving. Properly installed at an optimal height, it ensures highly reliable occupancy detection, particularly beneficial for rooms with a single entry point. This makes it more dependable than traditional motion sensors, which can't track continuous presence, and mmWave sensors, which may experience ghost detections due to signal interference.
This automation runs locally on your hub for faster response and continues to operate reliably even without internet connectivity.
