When motion is detected in the restroom, the bathroom light turns on. If no motion is detected for 3 minutes, the light turns off.
ffumz is a seasonal-vegetable restaurant in Mangwon-dong, Seoul, and we use several smart-home automations for daily operations. Although the shop is small, it has an in-house restroom. This automation helps save energy by keeping the bathroom light off when the restroom isn’t in use.
A SmartThings Motion Sensor is installed on the ceiling at a spot that can detect movement across the entire restroom, including the entrance. To prevent the light from turning off during brief pauses, the automation is set to switch the light off only after 3 consecutive minutes with no motion. The bathroom light itself is controlled by a SIHAS wall switch, which can be paired directly with the SmartThings Hub.
Since many people instinctively reach for the switch upon entering a restroom, especially if they’re not used to automated lighting, we’ve placed a small notice near the switch to discourage manually turning the light off while it’s on automatically. In fact, because all of ffumz’s switches are automated, we’re also considering concealing the physical switches from view.
