On weekday mornings at 8:00 am, the blind tilt opens and the TV turns on to wake me up.
On weekdays I get up at 8 am to get ready for work, but when I use a regular smartphone alarm, I always wake up feeling startled. I wanted a way to wake up a bit more gently, and that’s how I ended up with this automation.
Except on weekends and public holidays, my bedroom TV turns on at 8:00 am, and the blinds next to my bed tilt open. The combination of TV sound and sunlight works like a soft alarm that helps me wake up more comfortably.
The SwitchBot Blind Tilt motor is designed for blinds that open and close by twisting a wand. I paired it with a SwitchBot Hub 3 first, then brought it into SmartThings via Matter so I can control it there as well. If you install the included solar charging module, you’ll likely be able to use it continuously without manually recharging, depending on how often it operates.
My Samsung Crystal UHD TV is added to the SmartThings app over Wi-Fi, so I can use my phone as a remote. In automations, I can turn the TV on or off, mute it, change inputs, and switch picture and sound modes. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a way to automatically tune to a specific channel as part of the automation.
Still, thanks to this setup, I no longer feel like my lifespan is shrinking a little every day from being jolted awake by a blaring alarm, and I’m pretty happy with it.
