When the room is dark and I get out of bed to walk to the bathroom, a night light turns on to guide the way.
I set up this automation because I kept bumping into the dresser next to my bed when I got up at night to use the bathroom. Now, when I get out of bed and walk past the front of the dresser toward the bathroom, a soft night light shines on the floor so I can see where I’m going and avoid hitting the furniture.
To do this, I connected a ThirdReality Multi-Function Night Light to SmartThings and created an automation. As the name suggests, this device combines a light, a motion sensor, and a light (illuminance) sensor all in one. Thanks to that, I can handle everything with just this one device (plus a hub, of course): when it’s dark enough (in my case, 10 lux or below) and motion is detected, the light turns on, then automatically turns off after 30 seconds. It’s a simple setup, but very useful.
